How to Set Up Photo Widgets on iPhone

Complete step-by-step guide to setting up beautiful photo widgets on your iPhone home screen with PhotoWidget.

Why Photo Widgets Transform Your iPhone

Your iPhone home screen is the first thing you see dozens of times a day. Instead of staring at a grid of app icons, imagine seeing your favorite vacation photo, your partner's smile, or a rotating gallery of your best memories. That's exactly what photo widgets do — they turn your home screen into a living photo frame.

PhotoWidget makes this effortless. With over 10 million downloads and a 4.8-star rating, it's the most popular photo widget app on the App Store. Whether you want a single cherished photo or an auto-rotating gallery, this guide walks you through every step.

Step 1: Download and Open PhotoWidget

First, grab PhotoWidget from the App Store — it's completely free to download.

How to Install

  • Open the App Store on your iPhone
  • Search for "PhotoWidget" or "Photo Widget Simple"
  • Tap Get and authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID
  • Once installed, open the app

  • The app immediately shows you the main dashboard where you can start creating widgets. No account required — your photos stay on your device.

    Grant Photo Access

When prompted, tap "Allow Access to All Photos" so PhotoWidget can display your images. You can also select specific albums if you prefer limited access. Don't worry — PhotoWidget never uploads your photos anywhere. Everything stays local on your device.

Step 2: Create Your First Widget

Now comes the fun part — building your first photo widget.

    Choose Your Widget Size

PhotoWidget supports all three iPhone widget sizes:

  • Small (2×2) — Perfect for a single featured photo
  • Medium (4×2) — Great for a photo with a caption or date overlay
  • Large (4×4) — Ideal for photo collages or high-impact display

  • For your first widget, we recommend starting with a medium size. It offers the best balance of visibility and screen space.

    Select Your Photos

  • Tap "Create New Widget" in the app
  • Choose your preferred widget size
  • Tap "Add Photos" and browse your photo library
  • Select 1–20 photos for your widget rotation
  • Tap "Done" to confirm your selection

  • Pro tip: Choose photos with clear subjects and good contrast. Busy backgrounds tend to look cluttered at widget size. Check out our Photo Filters to give your selected photos a cohesive look.

    Step 3: Customize the Look

Plain photos are nice, but customized widgets are stunning. PhotoWidget gives you several ways to elevate your widget's appearance.

    Apply a Frame

Browse the Custom Frames library for dozens of border styles:

  • Classic — Clean white or black borders
  • Polaroid — Vintage instant-camera feel with a bottom caption area
  • Rounded — Soft corners that blend with iOS design language
  • Seasonal — Holiday-themed frames that rotate with the calendar

  • Tap any frame to preview it with your photos before applying. You can also adjust the frame thickness and color to match your home screen palette. Some frames support transparency, which creates an elegant floating effect against your wallpaper.

For best results, try two or three different frames with your selected photos before committing. What looks great on a landscape beach photo might not work as well with a close-up portrait. The preview feature lets you experiment freely.

    Add Filters and Effects

Consistency is key to a beautiful home screen. When your widget photos all share a similar color tone, the entire screen feels intentional and curated. Use Photo Filters to unify the color tone across all your widget photos:

  • Warm Film — Golden, nostalgic tones that bring a cozy, inviting feel
  • Cool Mono — Desaturated blues for a calm, sophisticated vibe
  • Vivid — Punched-up colors that pop against dark wallpapers
  • Fade — Subtle, muted aesthetic perfect for minimalist setups
  • Noir — High-contrast black and white for dramatic effect
  • Vintage — Slightly yellowed tones reminiscent of old film photographs

  • You can apply the same filter across all photos in a widget, which instantly makes a random collection of snapshots feel like a curated gallery. This is one of the most underrated tricks for a polished home screen.

    Configure Auto-Rotate

One of PhotoWidget's most beloved features is auto-rotation. Instead of seeing the same static image every day, your widget cycles through your photo selection automatically. Enable Auto-Rotate to cycle through them:

  • In your widget settings, toggle "Auto-Rotate" on
  • Set the rotation interval: every 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, or daily
  • Choose rotation order: sequential for a predictable slideshow, or shuffle for pleasant surprises
  • Optionally enable "Smart Timing" to change photos when you pick up your phone

  • Your widget will refresh in the background, showing a fresh photo each time you glance at your home screen. Many users tell us this is their favorite feature — every phone pickup brings back a different memory, keeping the home screen experience fresh and emotionally meaningful.

Step 4: Add the Widget to Your Home Screen

You've designed your widget inside the app. Now let's place it on your home screen.

    Using the Home Screen Editor

  • Long-press on any empty area of your home screen until the icons jiggle
  • Tap the "+" button in the top-left corner
  • Scroll down or search for "PhotoWidget"
  • Select your preferred widget size (small, medium, or large)
  • Tap "Add Widget"
  • Drag it to your desired position
  • Tap "Done" to save

  • After placing the widget, tap on it to select which widget design to display. If you created multiple widgets in the app, you can assign each home screen widget slot to a different design. This means you can have:

  • A small widget showing your partner's photo in the top row
  • A medium widget with a rotating family album in the center
  • A large widget showcasing your travel photography at the bottom

  • Step 5: Advanced Tips for the Best Results

Once your basic setup is complete, try these advanced techniques.

    Matching Your Wallpaper

The best home screens have widgets that complement the wallpaper. Open your wallpaper in a photo editor and note its dominant colors, then apply matching color filters to your widget photos. Browse our Inspiration Gallery for real examples of perfectly coordinated setups.

    Widget Stacks

iOS supports Smart Stacks — swipeable piles of widgets. Create multiple PhotoWidget widgets and stack them:

  • Drag one widget directly on top of another
  • iOS automatically creates a stack
  • Swipe up and down to browse your stacked widgets
  • Enable Smart Rotate so iOS shows the most relevant widget based on time and usage

  • Lock Screen Widgets (iOS 16+)

On iOS 16 and later, you can also add photo widgets to your lock screen:

  • Long-press on your lock screen
  • Tap "Customize"
  • Tap the widget area below the clock
  • Search for "PhotoWidget"
  • Add a small circular or rectangular widget

  • Lock screen widgets are smaller, so choose photos with a clear focal point.

    StandBy Mode (iOS 17+)

When you charge your iPhone on its side, StandBy mode activates. You can display PhotoWidget here too for a beautiful nightstand photo frame experience. Check out Latest Updates for the newest StandBy mode features.

    Troubleshooting Common Issues

    Widget Shows a Blank Screen

This usually means PhotoWidget needs a background refresh. Open the app once, wait a few seconds, then return to your home screen. The widget should update within minutes.

    Photos Look Blurry

Make sure you're using high-resolution photos from your camera roll, not screenshots or compressed images from messaging apps. PhotoWidget automatically optimizes display quality, but it can't improve a low-resolution source image.

    Widget Doesn't Auto-Rotate

Background App Refresh must be enabled for auto-rotation to work correctly. Go to Settings → General → Background App Refresh and make sure PhotoWidget is toggled on. Also check that Low Power Mode is not active, as it can temporarily pause background refreshes. After enabling these settings, give it about 15 minutes for the first rotation to kick in.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Q: Is PhotoWidget really free?

Yes! PhotoWidget is free to download and use with core features. You can create unlimited widgets, add photos, and use basic frames at no cost. Premium features like exclusive frame collections and advanced filters are available through an optional subscription, but most users find the free version more than sufficient.

Q: Does PhotoWidget drain my battery?

No. PhotoWidget is designed for minimal battery impact. Background photo rotation uses iOS's native widget refresh system, which is highly optimized. Most users report zero noticeable battery difference after installing photo widgets.

Q: Can I use photos from Google Photos or cloud albums?

Currently, PhotoWidget accesses photos stored locally on your device or synced through iCloud Photos. If your Google Photos are downloaded to your camera roll, they'll appear in PhotoWidget automatically. We recommend enabling iCloud Photo Library for the smoothest experience across all your Apple devices.
